Port partners with nonprofit to recycle mattresses

NEWBURYPORT — While many Massachusetts residents have had to figure out a new way to dispose of their old mattresses since the introduction of a new law in November, city residents haven’t had the same problem.

The state banned the disposal of mattresses to help promote recycling and reuse, while also reducing trash disposal. But since 2014, Newburyport has been working with UTEC of Lowell to recycle more than 900 mattresses, according to City Hall officials.
