Do you want to tour the world’s oldest green building, pick up a beautiful handmade cutting board, visit a brand new commercial “incubator” kitchen, enjoy scrumptious catering samples, watch a mattress being deconstructed, and meet UTEC’s awesome program participants – all in one visit? Join us this Saturday (May 6th), from noon to 2:00 PM, for all of this and more!
This Saturday’s Social Enterprise Showcase takes place at UTEC’s main building, at 35 Warren Street, Lowell, and is hosted by City Councilor Corey Belanger, Chair of Youth Services Committee. This open house is free and open to the public, and there will be something for everyone.
UTEC’s Social Enterprise programs provide our young adults with an opportunity to gain valuable job skills along with a living wage, while getting as many chances as needed to excel. These critical skills help UTEC’s young people redefine their futures.
There will be a lot to learn and see! To start, you can see how our young people break down a mattress, one step in the process of diverting some 200 tons of mattresses from landfills every year.
While here, you might also pick up one of our lovely cutting boards, crafted by the young people in our woodshop program from reclaimed eastern hardwoods. Sticking with the theme of sustainability, UTEC’s LEED Platinum building is the oldest, greenest in the world, and makes for a wonderful and unique option for weddings, dinner parties, corporate meetings, fundraisers, and more. Our Main Hall will be set for an event this Saturday and available for viewing, so you’ll get to envision your own future event.
While exploring our building and learning more about our social enterprises, you can enjoy free samples from our catering and café menus. You can also learn more our latest venture, too, by touring our just-opened commercial kitchen, which offers 5,000 square feet of top-of-the-line equipment, allowing multiple food entrepreneurs to be working simultaneously.
Best of all, our young adults who work in our various social enterprise programs will be present to help show you around, answer your questions, and give you a sense of what makes UTEC so special! Stop by and feel the Madd Love this weekend.
